The CAT5112 is a single digital POT suitable for use as an electronic replacement for mechanical potentiometers. Suitable for automatic adjustment of high volume production lines, or for applications requiring periodic adjustments where equipment is difficult to access or located in hazardous or remote environments, the CAT5112 contains a 32-tap series resistor array connecting two terminals, RH and RL. A positive/reverse counter and decoder, controlled by three input pins, determines which tap is connected to the arc brush RW. The CAT5112 arc brush is buffered by an operational amplifier running rail-to-rail. The arc brush settings stored in non-volatile memory are not lost when the device is powered down and are automatically recalled when power is restored. The arc brush can be adjusted to test new system values without affecting the stored settings. arc brush control of the CAT5112 is accomplished through three input control pins, CS, U/D, and INC. the INC input advances the arc brush in the direction determined by the logic state of the U/D input. the CS input is used to select the device and also to store the arc brush position prior to power failure. The digital potentiometer can be used as a buffer divider. For applications where the potentiometer is used as a 2-terminal variable resistor, refer to the CAT5114. The CAT5112's buffered arc brush is not compatible with this application.
